Grok Gets New Memory Feature for Personalized Conversations Based on Chat History

xAI’s AI Chatbot Grok Joins ChatGPT, Gemini in Offering Context-Aware, Custom Replies

San Francisco — Elon Musk’s AI venture xAI has introduced a new memory feature to its generative AI chatbot Grok, allowing it to retain details from past interactions to provide personalized responses in future conversations. The feature, announced Thursday, is now rolling out globally across Grok’s web and mobile apps, with the exception of the EU and UK due to privacy regulations.

Personalized AI Conversations Powered by Memory

With this update, Grok can now remember user preferences and previous prompts, much like existing features on ChatGPT and Gemini. Whether you’re building a workout plan, asking for recipe ideas, or seeking tailored recommendations, Grok will now consider your past choices and interactions to deliver more relevant, context-aware replies.

For example, if you’ve previously told Grok you prefer strength training over cardio, it will now weave that preference into your next fitness plan—without needing to be reminded.

Both free and paid users of Grok can access this memory feature across iOS, Android, and web platforms.

User Control and Transparency

To maintain transparency and user control, xAI is rolling out several new tools alongside memory support:

  • A “Referenced Chats” icon will appear next to the share icon whenever Grok uses memory to generate a response

  • Clicking the icon on the web interface opens a sidebar, displaying the specific memories used in that conversation

  • Users can delete individual memories directly from the sidebar or via the Settings > Data Controls menu

  • Users may also disable memory entirely through settings

Currently, these tools are available only on the web, but xAI confirms that mobile integration, especially for Android, is coming soon.

Limitations and Privacy Considerations

Although this feature is rolling out worldwide, users in the European Union and the UK will not have access, as xAI ensures compliance with strict regional data privacy laws. The company has not yet announced when—or if—it plans to bring memory features to those regions.

A Rapid Evolution for Grok in 2024

Since its November 2023 debut, Grok has made considerable strides to catch up with and compete against platforms from OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. Key highlights from Grok’s 2024 roadmap include:

  • The launch of Android and iOS apps

  • The introduction of the Grok 3 model featuring DeepSearch and Voice Mode

  • Integration with X (formerly Twitter), allowing users to tag @Grok for real-time AI responses

  • And now, the introduction of memory-based personalization

Conclusion

The new memory feature marks another important step in Grok’s evolution, offering smarter, more personalized responses and giving users more control over how their data is used. While it still trails behind in adoption compared to ChatGPT and Gemini, Grok’s rapid feature rollout and X integration suggest it’s fast becoming a key player in the generative AI space.
