US president Donald Trump mocked the United Nations during his speech after he faced a broken escalator and an inoperable teleprompter.
He used the two instances to illustrate his broader complaints about the world body.
“These are the two things I got from the United Nations, a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” he said.
Earlier today, as he arrived at the UN building on New York’s East River, the escalator stopped while he was riding up.
"I don't mind making this speech without a teleprompter, because the teleprompter is not working... I can only say that whoever is operating this teleprompter is in big trouble," Trump said as he began to deliver his speech.
Reiterating his claim about "stopping" several wars, Trump took aim at the United Nations, saying: "Never even got a call from the United Nations in finalising the deal. All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that, on the way up, stopped right in the middle. If the First Lady wasn't in great shape, she would have fallen. But she's in great shape, we both are in great shape…we both stood. And then a teleprompter that didn't work. These are the two things from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter."
He also recalled his failed attempt to renovate the UN headquarters in the 2010s, complaining that they chose terrazzo floors instead of the marble he proposed.
"They still haven’t finished the job," he said, returning to the broken escalator.
Trump also called his governance the "Golden Age of America" as kicked off his much-awaited speech. It was the first time Trump addressed the general assembly after he returned to office as US President in January this year.
Minutes after completing his speech, Trump continued complaining about the teleprompter and the escalator, saying: "It is always an honour to speak at the United Nations, even if, their equipment is somewhat faulty."
"The teleprompter was broken and the escalator came to a sudden hault as we were ridding up to the podium, but both of those events probably made the speech more interesting than it would have been otherwise. It is always an honor to speak at the United Nations, even if, their equipment is somewhat faulty. Make America Great Again!," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump further said: "It was a great honor to speak before the United Nations. I believe the speech was very well received. It focused very much on energy and migration/immigration. I have been talking about this for a long period of time and this Forum, was the absolute best from the standpoint of making these two important statements. I hope everybody gets to watch it!"
