Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a stark warning to Russian officials , saying that if Moscow continues its invasion of Ukraine, they should know the locations of bomb shelters .
“They have to know where the bomb shelters are,” Zelenskyy told Axios. “They need it.”
“If they will not stop the war, they will need it in any case,” he further added.
Speaking on The Axios Show, Zelenskyy said that Russia’s centres of power, including the Kremlin, could be considered legitimate targets. “They have to know that we in Ukraine, each day, we will answer. If they attack us, we will answer them,” he said.
He also revealed that the US President Donald Trump had supported Ukraine to strike Russian energy facilities and arms factories. Zelenskyy said that if the US provides Ukraine with more long-range weapons, they “will use it.”
During their meeting on Tuesday, Zelenskyy requested a new weapons system , which he believes could pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiations, to which Trump responded, “We will work on it.”
Zelenskyy also assured that Ukraine would not target civilians, saying, “we are not terrorists.” However, he also made it clear that key Russian military and government sites were on the table.
He added that Kyiv already has drones capable of striking deep inside Russia but hopes the new weapons system will increase leverage on Putin. “We need it, but it doesn’t mean that we will use it.”
“Because if we’ll have it, I think it’s additional pressure on Putin to sit and speak,” Zelenskyy said.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Ukrainian leader said that the world is facing “the most destructive arms race in history” and called for urgent action to halt Russia’s aggression, stressing that Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to expand the war across Europe.
“We are now living through the most destructive arms race in history,” Zelenskyy said at the UN General Assembly.
“Ukraine is only the first and now Russian drones are already flying across Europe, and Russian operations are already spreading across countries, and Putin wants to continue this war by expanding it.”
His speech followed a meeting with Trump, during which the US president expressed strong support for Ukraine and criticised Russia. Trump also stated that he believes Ukraine can reclaim all territory taken by Moscow, a shift from his previous calls for Kyiv to make concessions.
Speaking at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Zelenskyy also highlighted that a ceasefire remains impossible because Russia has refused to halt its attacks.
