'Exercise to protect PM's image': Rahul Gandhi on Op Sindoor; dares Modi to call Trump 'liar'

NEW DELHI: Leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi launched a massive attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Operation Sindoor debate, saying the "exercise was to protect the PM's image".

Rahul Gandhi also dared PM Modi to call Trump "a liar" in Parliament over the US President's repeated claims of using trade as leverage to materialise a ceasefire and that fighter jets were shot down during the India-Pakistan conflict.

"If Narendra Modi has even 50 per cent of the courage of Indira Gandhi, he should declare in the House that Trump is lying about the ceasefire," Rahul Gandhi said.

The Raebareli MP said PM Modi couldn't ask Trump how he could invite Pakistan General Asim Munir on a lunch.

"The man behind the Pahalgam terror attack is Pakistan General Asim Munir. Recently, he had a lunch meeting with US President Donald Trump. PM Modi hasn't said anything. He didn't say, 'How dare Mr. Trump invite him to his office?" the Congress leader said.

"The government of India informed the government of Pakistan that we have no political will, we don’t want to fight. We have simply carried out this action. Surrender was demanded, an immediate surrender within 30 minutes," Rahul Gandhi said.

Quoting Shiv Kumar, Defence Attaché in Indonesia, who had said that India did "lose some" of its aircraft during the conflict with Pakistan, Rahul Gandhi said: "That happened only because of the constraint placed by the political leadership".

"Now, there’s a second very important point that Rajnath Singh ji mentioned. Perhaps he didn’t mean to say it, but he also stated that they informed the Pakistanis that we would not target any of their military infrastructure. This is a very interesting fact, and I want you to listen carefully. I spoke about freedom of manoeuvre, meaning giving the Air Force full operational freedom. Now, listen to this quote carefully. Captain Shiv Kumar, Defence Attaché in Indonesia, said, 'I may not agree with the claim that India lost so many aircraft, but I do agree that we did lose some.” And that happened only because of the constraint placed by the political leadership, not to attack Pakistan’s military establishments or their air defence systems. In other words, we went into Pakistan, launched an attack, and told our pilots not to target their air defence systems", said Rahul Gandhi.
