NEW DELHI: Asserting that US giant Apple "has decided to source and produce all its mobile phones in India in the years to come," telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday said the country has emerged as an affordable and reliable manufacturing partner for smartphone makers across the world.
Speaking at the Bharat Telecom event, Scindia said the investment in India at present is not just an act of goodwill but also makes economic sense for every OEM (original equipment manufacturer).
The minister said the telecom equipment market, aided by govt's production-linked incentive scheme, has witnessed multi-fold growth. "Investment of Rs 4,000 crore, half a billion dollars alone, has resulted in sales of Rs 80,000 crore, Rs 16,000 crore in exports, (and) 25,000 jobs being created. Therefore, the telecom equipment market has also grown manifold in India," he said.
India has not only caught up with the world in areas like 4G and 5G, but is now leading the charge, with sweeping reforms and technological innovation shaping the country's trajectory, he said.
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently announced that the company will source the majority of iPhones sold in the US from India in the June quarter, while China will produce the majority of the devices for other markets.
Scindia: In just 22 months, India linked 99% of villages with 5G
Speaking at 'Bharat Telecom 2025', an event attended by more than 130 foreign delegates from over 35 countries, telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said it is not just a conference, but more of a declaration of India's intent to shape the future of global connectivity through innovation, collaboration and inclusive growth. "When ideas, innovation and intent come together in harmony, they create not a cacophony, but a symphony, and 'Bharat Telecom' is that symphony of global collaboration and opportunity."
The minister also said that in just 22 months, India has manged to connect 99% of villages with 5G and brought 82% of the population onto the network, deploying 470,000 towers. "This is not evolution; it is a telecom revolution."
He further said out that the 'digital highway' that has been built across the country is not merely about communication. "It is empowering 1.4 billion citizens with access to healthcare, education, governance, and economic opportunity," he said. Minister of state for telecommunications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said India from being a large importer of mobile phones, around 2014, India has now become a large producer and exporter of mobile phones.
