Google I/O 2025: Android 16, AI product announcements and other things to expect from the event

Send Push
Google is set to host its annual developer conference, Google I/O 2025 , on May 20 and May 21. This year’s event is expected to include announcements related to Android 16 and various AI products. Google's main keynote on day one (May 20) will likely focus on its innovations, with a major emphasis on AI. It's important to note that Google recently hosted a separate event dedicated to Android, the “Android Show: I/O Edition,” where Android 16 was introduced. This event provided insights into the new Material 3 Expressive interface, security updates, and the integration of Gemini across more devices. By holding a separate Android event, Google may have freed up more time during the I/O keynote to discuss other key areas such as Gemini, DeepMind, Android XR , and Project Astra .

While major Android OS announcements are less anticipated during the I/O keynote itself due to the recent Android Show, the event is still expected to be packed with information, particularly around AI and XR technologies. Here are the details about how to watch the keynote and what more to expect

Google I/O 2025: How to watch the livestream

Google I/O spans two days May 20 and 21, while the opening keynote is set to begin at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET (10.30 pm IST) on May 20. Interested users can stream the keynote via Google’s I/O website or YouTube channel. Plan for a lengthy session as I/O keynotes often last around two hours, and although there may not be any major Android reveals this year, the duration is expected be similar.

Google I/O 2025: What to expect

According to a report by The Verge, this year’s Google I/O keynote will once again center around AI. It follows a day after Microsoft’s Build event, setting up a direct comparison. At the event, Google is expected to announce new Gemini features for phones and other devices, more powerful Gemini models, and updates on the Project Astra.

Apart from AI, Google may also be planning to share more about Android XR, including its prototype smart glasses, following a brief tease during last week’s Android Show. With Samsung aiming to launch its Project Moohan headset later this year, this I/O may be Google’s opportunity to showcase its XR software.

Unlike past I/Os, new Pixel phones or Nest devices are unlikely to be announced at the upcoming event as any major hardware launches would have been timed around last week’s events. The focus is expected to remain on software, primarily AI and XR, with only a slim chance of new XR hardware.
