Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders Delayed in the U.S. Due to Trump Tariffs

Send Push
Although pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. had been highly anticipated, they have been put on hold while the company assesses the impact of recently imposed tariffs by US President Donald Trump. As a result, the pre-order date, which was originally set for April 9, 2025, has been postponed indefinitely, sending up red flags for possible price hikes for consumers in the U.S.

Gamers left waiting as Nintendo delays Switch 2 pre-ordersAccording to multiple sources, Nintendo confirmed the delay in a statement, "Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged."

Economic uncertainty hits gaming: Pre-orders pushed backThese tariffs, now announced within hours of the Switch 2's pricing revelation, contain what appears to be a hefty 34% duty on imported goods from China and, even heftier, 46% on those imports from Vietnam- where Nintendo has reportedly directed most of its hardware production in recent years. These tariffs could possibly make it quite a bit more expensive for Nintendo to sell the console in the United States, raising speculation that the price of switch 2, which starts off at $449.99, might be about to increase still further. Of course, along those lines is the Mario Kart World bundle that retails at $499.99 and the game at $79.99.

Is trade war causing market chaos?
Critics blame Trump’s aggressive trade policies for escalating tensions, warning of inflation and higher consumer prices. According to the market experts, this kind of sudden policy change may hit many tech and gaming companies that really depend on part of their production in Asia. So far, there have been no indications from Nintendo about a price hike but if that were to happen, whether significantly or otherwise, it might draw a blow from local consumers in the U.S., principally with regards to competing machines available in the market.

Though pre-orders may be uncertain now, that delay does not change the global launch schedule for the console. American gamers anxious to grab their Switch 2 units can only wait for word from Nintendo on a new date set for pre-orders.

As this narrative continues, so too will eyes watching Nintendo to see how this is woven into the fabric of these economic challenges, and if consumers in the United States will face an increased price when the Switch 2 finally comes out in June.
