New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a vision of growth, peace, and prosperity for India’s North Eastern states during his inaugural address at the Rising North East Investors Summit on Friday. Framing the region as central to India’s future, he described the North East as the “Ashta Lakshmi” of India - the Eight Forms of Wealth - and declared that “confidence is the biggest transformation the region has seen in the last decade.”

Opening his speech Modi said: “When I am on this grand stage of Rising North East, my heart is filled with pride, warmth, and a deep sense of belonging. But most importantly, there is immense confidence in the future.”

PM Modi emphasized that this confidence stems from unprecedented development across sectors — from highways and digital networks to startups and education. Over 11,000 km of highways, new rail lines, and an expanding air network now connect the once-isolated region. Projects like the Sela Tunnel, Bhupen Hazarika Bridge, and India-Myanmar-Thailand Highway reflect what he called an “infrastructure revolution.” “Good infrastructure is not just about roads — it’s about trust, safety, and investment confidence,” he asserted.

Reimagining the region as a growth engine, Modi said, “There was a time when the North East was called just a frontier region — today it is becoming the frontrunner of growth.” He cited growth in sectors like bamboo, petroleum, solar, and organics, calling on investors to seize this “first-mover advantage.”

The Prime Minister positioned the region at the core of India’s Act East Policy , saying, “The North East will become a strong bridge and gateway for ASEAN trade.” With trade expected to surpass $200 billion, key logistics hubs are emerging in Guwahati, Imphal, and Agartala.

Celebrating a new era of digital innovation, Modi lauded the youth as “not just internet users, they are digital innovators,” noting 13,000+ km of optical fiber and expanding 5G coverage.

On security and stability, the PM noted a historic shift: “There was a time when the North East was associated with bombs, guns, and blockades… Now, it’s opportunity, peace, and prosperity.” Over 10,000 youth have surrendered arms, and peace accords have strengthened governance.

Calling the region a “wellness and organic powerhouse,” Modi envisioned a future where North East brands grace global dining tables. He also projected the region as a tech and green energy frontier, hinting that “the first ‘Made in India’ chip from the North East will be available soon.”

In closing, he urged India’s investors to join hands in the region’s transformation: “This is not just an investors’ summit — it’s a movement fueled by confidence.”
“Let us come together and turn the Ashta Lakshmi of India into an inspiration for a developed India.”
