Locals have praised a tiny city in the UK that is home to a significantly affluent population, with amazing charity shops that get stellar donations. While some charity shops around the country are closing, thrifting is still a favourite pastime for many Brits. And some areas of the country are better for thrifting than others. While cities like Bristol are regularly named "thrifting capitals" in the UK, there is actually a much smaller city that is packed full of charity shops, so much so that you could spend a whole day thrifting there.
When one Reddit user asked in a post where they should go for charity shopping in the UK, one person revealed an underrated gem where they often find really good second-hand items at pretty great prices. Compared to thrifting favourites like Bristol and London, this city is tiny, with just 29,000 people, according to the latest census data. Chichester is located in West Sussex and has a huge number of charity shops in relation to its population and general size. Chichester is known as a relatively wealthy city. In fact, it was named by City Living as the 4th most expensive city to live in the UK.
With wealth here, you can imagine some of the things that get donated to charity shops, which are then sold at great prices. When the Redditor asked for suggestions for towns and cities for charity shopping in the UK, one local explained why Chichester is a great choice.
"My town (Chichester, a city technically but tiny) is good," they revealed. "It has loads of charity shops, but it's an affluent area, so you can get some real bargains in it."
"Whenever my aunt or a friend from other areas visits, they always make time for a charity shop visit." And when you look at a map of the city, it is evident that there is a high concentration of charity shops, all within minutes of each other.
Chichester high street actually includes North Street, South Street, East Street and West Street - and you will find 11 charity shops there, with the iconic city cathedral in the middle. You will find plenty of clothes shops as well as charity shops selling books and music.
A few minutes' walk away from these charity shops are a few more further south, just past the train station. These are mainly second-hand furniture shops, which you can check out once you have had enough of looking at clothes and accessories.
There is also a charity shop at Chichester Hospital. Here is a full list of the charity shops you can hit up during a trip to Chichester, starting at the northernmost one and making your way south:
