Autumn is nearly upon us, and with it come the chilly nights in and a plethora of cinnamon-flavoured desserts. It also marks the peak season for spider sightings indoors, as they seek warmth and a place to hide from the rain and dropping temperatures.
While most spider species found in the UK are harmless, their sudden appearances can alarm many homeowners. Luckily, there's a simple, natural method to keep them out-and you probably already have the key ingredient sitting in your kitchen cupboard. White vinegar works wonders in deterring these eight-legged visitors, but the way it is applied is key to its effectiveness.
White vinegar is a highly effective deterrent against spiders thanks to its sharp scent and acidic properties.
"The scent of the vinegar will deter spiders and make them less likely to settle in your home," pointed out pest control expert Robert Collins at MyJobQuote.co.uk.
To make this natural repellent at home, simply fill a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water.
While it may seem tempting to spritz this mixture everywhere, its true power lies in strategic placement.
Spray it around entry points - particularly door frames, window sills, vents, and other cracks where spiders might enter. These are the "key locations" that, when treated regularly, form a natural barrier against spider intrusions.
For a boost in efficiency - and a more pleasant scent - you can enhance your white vinegar spray with a few drops of lavender and peppermint essential oil.
Robert advised: "Add 15 - 20 drops of peppermint oil to a spray bottle with water and spritz this in any areas where you've noticed spiders in the home."
