have consistently been voted the nation's favourite flower, and nothing says spring is finally here like the sight of roses bursting into bloom. Roses will be gearing up to from May through to early October. Some varieties repeat-flower which means they will produce flushes of blooms throughout the season, while others will begin to flower earlier in mid-spring. Before roses start to flower, gardeners need to complete some regular maintenance tasks such as , feeding and mulching to ensure their roses thrive for the rest of the year.
To flower successfully, roses need ample sunlight (around six to eight hours per day), regular, deep watering, and pruning. However, there is one task that will ensure your roses produce a "fine display of vibrant flowers", claims a expert.
According to Rob Clarke, technical manager at , feeding is the secret to ensuring your roses give you the best ever blooms.
He said: "To ensure that your roses put on fine displays of vibrant flowers, feed every seven to 14 days from March to August.
"Well-fed roses will display greener and glossier foliage, as well as longer lasting and more fragrant flowers that fill the air with perfume on summer days."
Mr Clarke said gardeners should use a tailored feed that contains potassium, magnesium and iron.
He explained that potassium supports flowering, and iron and magnesium are essential for greener, glossier foliage.
Some formulas will help roses build resistance to diseases and improve soil structure.
If they don't have plant food, gardeners can make banana water by soaking banana peels in water.
Banana water is rich in potassium and other nutrients which should support flower production.
