Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent an emergency operation on Monday night following a severe abdominal injury sustained during Sunday's match against Leicester. The Nigerian international had a nasty collision with the goalpost towards the end of Forest's 2-2 Premier League draw with their East Midlands rivals at the City Ground.

The surgery was deemed necessary due to the severity of the injury, which, according to the PA news agency, is not life-threatening. Despite attempting to continue after receiving extensive treatment, the full extent of Awoniyi's injury was only discovered when he was examined by medical staff on Monday.

Afterwards, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis said: "We were frustrated about how Taiwo's injury was managed and the medical team's judgement on his ability to continue playing. This shows how deeply we care about our club."

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo explained: "It was disappointing for everybody. Unfortunately, we had to play the last ten minutes with one man less. Taiwo gave it a go but it was too painful for him to really push and help the team."
