Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold is ramping up his training as he recovers from an ankle injury. The Reds right-back was spotted training with the first team on Wednesday, with it believed he is in the final stages of his rehabilitation.
The 26-year-old participated in part of the session with Arne Slot's squad but did not complete the full workout as they gear up for their trip to Leicester on Sunday. He has been sidelined since sustaining the injury against Paris Saint-Germain last month during Liverpool's Champions League exit, missing four matches as a result.
Liverpool's medical team will continue to oversee his recovery and gradually increase his training intensity. Slot is anticipated to provide an update on Alexander-Arnold's fitness on Friday, although the match at the King Power Stadium may come too soon for him.
His injury layoff comes at a pivotal moment for Alexander-Arnold, who has yet to reveal his decision regarding his current contract situation, which runs out at the end of June.
Alexander-Arnold was one of three key players whose contracts were due to expire, alongside Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, but now remains the only one yet to pledge his future to the club.
Salah has just secured his future at Liverpool with a two-year contract extension announced last Friday, and hot on his heels, Van Dijk is set to do the same. This leaves Alexander-Arnold in an uncertain position with whispers of Real Madrid interest.
Meanwhile, Reds skipper Van Dijk has made his expectations clear for Liverpool's summer strategy after delivering victory against West Ham.
"Whatever happens in terms of players going out, players coming in, I think it should be a big summer," he commented post-match on Sunday after netting the winner. "I think they're planning to make it a big summer, so we all have to trust the board, as a Liverpool-connected fan, to do the right job. I think Liverpool should be able to challenge for titles in the upcoming years."
Liverpool stand on the brink of Premier League glory; Arsenal losing to Ipswich combined with a Reds win over Leicester could seal the deal, although it seems more probable that triumphs over Leicester this weekend and Tottenham come April 27 will crown them champions.
While speculation about Alexander-Arnold's future intensifies due to the Real Madrid links, his return to fitness is timely. It allows him the chance to play for Liverpool once more before his current deal expires, giving him a potential swansong with his boyhood club.
In team news, Darwin Nunez missed out last week due to illness but is back training, indicating he might be ready for action on Sunday.
