Lance Stroll comes clean on Aston Martin points scoring as pressure begins to boil

Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll has admitted the team are reliant on chaotic Grand Prix races to score points as they continue to struggle in 2025. Stroll and team-mate Fernando Alonso currently lie sixth in the constructors' standings on 52 points, sparking speculation on the future of both drivers for next season.

The pair did produce their best showing of the season in Hungary last time out, with Alonso fifth and Stroll seventh. However, team owner and Stroll's father, Lawrence, has voiced his ambition to win an F1 title with his team. That goal currently appears a considerable way off, with his drivers having struggled since amassing 530 points in 2023.

Despite improved form before the summer break, Stroll Jnr has cast doubt on whether the momentum can continue when the campaign resumes in the Netherlands at the end of the month. The 26-year-old conceded they would need inclement conditions in Grand Prix races to prosper.

"On a normal dry weekend, maybe if the track suits the car perfectly and we get everything out of it, we can snag a point or two," he said. "But it feels like a lot of the time, it's those kinds of (wet) weekends that we're relying on to mix things up and get something out of it."

Stroll also candidly said Aston Martin was not where they wanted to be, adding: "We're not as competitive as we want to be, that's for sure. As a team, we want to be fighting further up and scoring more points every weekend.

"There's a lot of work going on back at Silverstone to keep pushing, keep making the car faster. Some fun races for sure this season, some fun wet races where we capitalised on opportunities and scored some points. But we want to be faster."

Aston Martin took over the team from Racing Point for the 2021 season, with Stroll racing alongside Sebastian Vettel for the first two seasons. Alonso came on board two years later following the German's retirement.

Stroll and veteran Alonso are joint 11th in the drivers' standings with 26 points. They have 10 races left in the season to address the balance before the new F1 regulations come in for 2026.
