heroes and hailed over Lyon. However, the duo warned that aspects of their performance in their incredible 5-4 Europa League victory were not good enough.
The Red Devils seemed destined to reach a new dreadful low in a season full of appalling results. Ten-man Lyon led 4-2 in extra-time, which would have left United competing for nothing for the remainder of the campaign. However, a miraculous three-goal haul in the second half of extra-time sealed Ruben Amorim's greatest night so far as United head coach.
First, Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to score what appeared a mere consolation. But Kobbie Mainoo then brought the tie level - an astonishing 6-6 aggregate scoreline - with a superb finish. With United needing one more goal to advance to the semi-finals, Harry Maguire's thumping header in the 121st minute sealed a dramatic triumph.
"Obviously it's an incredible game. We made really hard work of it, half-time 2-0 up," Maguire told TNT Sports. "We had full control, even in the second half when we had chances to score the third. Then they score out of nowhere, we concede a bit of a pinball goal. That puts us on the back foot and they get the equaliser and then to go 4-2 down against 10 men, nowhere near good enough. We opened ourselves up too much.
"They (Lyon) are a good team and they have some good forwards, they play great football. But we dug in and we showed great spirit and that's what this stadium does. To come back like that, it's an incredible performance from everyon in the final minutes.

"Yeah definitely [I believed we could win]. The fourth goal for them was a real sucker punch. At 3-2 it felt like we could get chances to come back into it. As soon as we got the fourth, it felt like we were going to get another chance and fortunately it fell to myself and I put it in the back of the net. It was an amazing feeling."
Mainoo added: "It was an amazing comeback. We put ourselves in that situation, though. When I came on, I was just trying to bring energy and try to contribute to the team. They'd been doing so well. "[For my goal], when the ball drops to you, a yard feels like a mile. Just got to stay as calm as you can and that's what I did."
United will face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals.
