British have been told to 'forget Barcelona' in favour of an underrated city that's the 'best in '. Influencer Jade Gartshore (@jadeinspain) is recommending Murcia instead of the country's major cities.
She called it a "hidden jewel," saying: "I left the UK to move to Murcia. I'm in love with the city. I can't believe I get to live in such a beautiful place." is in south-eastern Spain, between Malaga and Alicante, and is the seventh largest city in the country. Located on the Segura River, it has hot summers, mild winters, and relatively low rainfall. Lonely Planet said Murcia is a "buzzy regional capital with pleasant parks and a cracking eating scene".
The Cathedral of Murcia was built between 1394 and 1465 in the Castilian Gothic style. Its tower was completed in 1792 and shows a blend of architectural styles including Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical. Also in Plaza Cardinal Belluga is the colorful 'Bishop's Palace', built in the 18th-century.
Another spot worth visiting is the Royal Casino, a social club started in 1847. It has a sumptuous interior that includes a Moorish-style foyer inspired by the royal chambers of the Alhambra near Granada.
The region is nicknamed the 'Garden of Europe' due to its fertile soil and extensive farmlands - the produce of which can be seen at Mercado de Veronicas.
Murcia has festivals including Holy Week, when statues are removed from museums and paraded around the city; the Spring Fest, when locals dress in traditional clothing for the Orchard Parade and The Burial of the Sardine; and many others.
There is also much to do in the surrounding area. The Segura River Valley is surrounded by two mountain ranges, the hills of Guadalupe, Espinardo, Cabezo de Torres, Esparragal and Monteagudo in the north and the Cordillera Sur in the south.
Monteagudo Castle (11th-century) lies on a rocky mountain next to the town of the same name. The castle fell into decline in the 16th century and has only been partially restored since. Now, there is a colossal statue of Jesus atop the castle with his arms outstretched.
The region offers a range of other sights, from 155 miles of beaches and coves, to medieval towns like the ancient port of Cartagena, to forests and valleys perfect for hiking.
Those looking to visit Murcia can fly from Manchester, London, Bournemouth, and Nottingham. The city has a range of accommodation to stay in, including hotels, holiday lets, and hostels.
