William Brent Hinds, from the heavy metal band Mastodon, has died following a motorcycle crash, it has been reported. The 51-year-old was riding his Harley Davidson bike when it is believed a BMW SUV crashed into him near Boulevard, Atlanta. According to The Sun, the former lead guitarist, who co-founded the popular band in 2000, was rushed to the hospital after being found unresponsive. The Fulton County medical examiner's office confirmed Hinds' death, Atlanta News First reported.
Atlanta Police Department stated: "Officers located an unresponsive male who was involved in the collision. The male appeared to be operating a Harley Davidson during the time of the collision." Hinds co-founded the heavy metal band with other members such as bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer Brann Dailor. Their 2002 debut album, Remission, was received with acclaim.
Tributes have now started to pour in for Hinds on social media. One person said on X: "Wow, brutal loss. One of the most original sounding guitarists in metal. I know he left Mastodon this year, but this is heartbreaking. Crack the Skye brother, RIP."
A second also commented: "This is so horrible. Thinking of everyone in the Mastodon camp today. It must be so hard for them to process all of this."
A third similarly echoed: "That's tragic. Mastodon was one of the most unique bands of the last 25 years. Brent's creative force was a big part of that. Rest in peace, Brent."
A fourth also chimed in: "Sucks a lot. I LOVE Mastodon. I was really hoping he and the rest of the band could reconcile someday."
On Instagram, the heavy metal band officially put out a tribute, saying: "We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief... last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident.
"We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we've shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent's family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone's privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent."
Brent Hinds left the band earlier this year in March.
