Monsoon 2025 Forecast: India to Receive Above-Normal Rainfall from June to September, Says IMD

Great news for farmers and the economy! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its 2025 monsoon forecast, predicting that the country is likely to witness above-normal rainfall during the four-month monsoon season from June to September.

According to M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, total rainfall could reach 105% of the long-term average of 87 cm. The southwest monsoon officially spans June 1 to September 30.

As per IMD Director-General Mrutyunjay Mahapatra, the monsoon probabilities are as follows:

  • 30% chance of normal rainfall (96–104% of LPA)

  • 33% chance of above-normal rainfall (105–110% of LPA)

  • 26% chance of excess rainfall (above 110% of LPA)

States likely to experience normal to above-normal rainfall include:

  • Madhya Pradesh

  • Rajasthan

  • Maharashtra (especially Marathwada)

  • Odisha

  • Chhattisgarh

  • Uttar Pradesh

  • West Bengal

  • Parts of Telangana

Some regions may experience below-average rainfall, such as:

  • Tamil Nadu

  • Bihar

  • Jammu & Kashmir

  • Ladakh
