Washington: The US has declared 'The Resistance Front' (TRF), responsible for spreading violence in Jammu and Kashmir, a terrorist organization. The US State Department announced this on Thursday, July 17. This group, a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, in which 26 civilians were killed. Referring to India's Pahalgam attack, the US State Department said that TRF has been declared a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).
The Resistance Front was described as a proxy group of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. Lashkar is already listed as a terrorist group by both the United Nations and the US. Citing the involvement of TRF in several attacks against India, including the Pahalgam terror attack, the US State Department said the decision reflects the "Trump Administration's commitment to protecting US national security, countering terrorism, and implementing President Trump's call for justice following the Pahalgam attack."
Action on Lashkar-e-Taiba's proxyThe statement said that 'Under Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224, Lashkar-e-Taiba 's TRF and other related aliases have been recognized as FTO and SDGT. The Department of State has reviewed and retained Lashkar-e-Taiba's FTO designation.'
The statement described the TRF as a proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba, which claimed responsibility for the 22 April 2025 attack in Pahalgam, the deadliest attack on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks by Lashkar-e-Taiba. The TRF has also claimed responsibility for several attacks on Indian security forces, including the one in 2024.
There was a massacre in the Pahalgam attackThe Pahalgam attack shook India. After the attack, the survivors told that people were shot after asking their religion. People were asked to recite Kalma before being shot. Most of the 26 victims killed were Hindus. TRF immediately took responsibility for this attack. In response to the Pahalgam massacre, India launched Operation Sindoor, under which targeted attacks were carried out on terrorist networks across the Line of Control and in Pakistani territory. After this, a military conflict started between the two countries, which ended on May 10.
