IPL rules changed just for Dhoni, caused damage to cricket... Sunil Gavaskar's statement caused a stir

Sunil Gavaskar has talked about reducing the salary cap of uncapped players in IPL. He raised questions on retaining Mahendra Singh Dhoni and said that this can cause damage to Indian cricket.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has started a new debate with his statement in the Indian Premier League. This legend directly said that if a big player like Dhoni was retained as an uncapped player, then it has caused damage to cricket. Maybe in his place, some player would have got a chance who may or may not have been able to make a career but his future would have been better. He said that BCCI should reduce the salary cap to retain uncapped players.

Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar, "The uncapped player limit was raised to Rs 4 crore before the auction last year to fit Mahendra Singh Dhoni into the team. Perhaps it is time to revisit it and reduce it further so that Indian cricket does not lose talent who bumble their way under the pressure of being sold for crores in the auction."

 Gavaskar says a player failing to justify his salary and eventually fading into obscurity may not affect a franchise but it is a loss for Indian cricket. He wrote, "A lot of players who are bought for huge sums simply disappear because their hunger and drive are satisfied. For the franchises it may not matter as they can consider it good riddance. Indian cricket suffers a slight jolt with the loss of any player whether he has been successful or not." 

Gavaskar says players who become rich after being signed for a hefty sum can be proud of luck. You may be nervous about standing shoulder to shoulder with an international star. He wrote, Gavaskar further wrote, "If you look back at the last few years and remember the uncapped players who were given huge amounts of money and performed brilliantly. Money brings more pressure.

Before the IPL 2025 mega auction, the team was allowed to pay a maximum amount of Rs 4 crore to retain uncapped players. This rule was in place since the 2022 mega auction, which was reintroduced. Dhoni was retained by Chennai Super Kings as an uncapped player
