Mumbai: Mumbai’s Metro-9, which will connect Dahisar (East) to Mira-Bhayandar, is on track for a phased launch, with the first phase likely to be inaugurated the end of 2025. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde flagged off the trial runs of Phase 1 connecting Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon route on Wednesday. They also conducted a technical inspection of the route, signalling key progress in the ambitious transport project.

According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), civil construction is nearly 85 per cent complete along the stretch. Due to pending work in some segments, the rollout will happen in two stages. The Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon section will be opened first, followed by the full corridor once all stations and infrastructure are ready. Officials estimate that the first phase could be ready for public use after trial runs conclude, pointing toward an inauguration window by the end of 2025.
Metro-9, also known as the Red Line, is an extension of the operational Metro-7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) and is aimed at improving east-west suburban connectivity. It is expected to majorly reduce travel time and ease congestion across northern Mumbai and Mira-Bhayandar. Initially, Metro-9 rakes will be maintained at the Charkop depot currently used by Metro-7.

CM Fadnavis Speaks On Key Metro Connecting Western Suburbs
During the site visit, Chief Minister Fadnavis underlined the metro’s role in transforming commute patterns for the region. “This stretch from Dahisar to Kashigaon will offer seamless connectivity and greatly benefit Mira-Bhayandar residents and commuters from Mumbai,” he said.
Fadnavis also pointed to a major engineering feat in the project, a double-decker structure that will accommodate both a metro line and a railway bridge. “This is the first time such a dual-chamber structure is being implemented in Mumbai. It will help eliminate traffic bottlenecks and is a key innovation in urban transit design,” he added.
Further extending the city’s metro reach, the government plans to push the corridor northward toward Virar. MMRDA aims to make the entire Metro-9 line operational for public use by the end of 2025, with the broader metro integration and extensions across the city scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
With trial phases already underway and infrastructure rapidly nearing completion, commuters in the western suburbs can expect a faster, smoother travel experience sooner than later.
