Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on Wednesday that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police, probing the alleged Pakistani links of Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and his family, has unearthed startling facts which point towards a larger conspiracy aimed at undermining India’s sovereignty.
In an apparent reference to Gogoi (who is also a member of Parliament), and his wife Elizabeth Coulburn, the chief minister said on X that the SIT probe has also established the involvement of a British national, who is married to an Indian MP, in the larger nefarious activities of Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, a Pakistani national.
The SIT formally submitted its report to CM Sarma on Wednesday evening.
The Chief Minister’s Office in Dispur confirmed that the SIT, led by special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, submitted its report to Sarma at the Lok Sewa Bhawan. Other SIT members Rosie Kalita, Pranabjyoti Goswami and Maitrayee Deka were also present.
“On 17th February 2025 the Assam Cabinet constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the anti-India activities of one Pakistani national, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, and his associates. During the course of this exhaustive investigation, the SIT has unearthed startling facts which point towards a larger conspiracy aimed at undermining the sovereignty of our nation,’ Sarma said in a post on X.
Furthermore, the investigation also sheds light on how the ministry of interior, government of Pakistan facilitated the visit of a member of Parliament from Assam to their country, he said.
The Assam government will now examine the report of the SIT in detail and place it before the state Cabinet, Sarma said. The contents of the report would be made public after that, he added.
Sarma has been attacking Gogoi over his wife Colburn’s alleged connection with the Pakistan spy agency ISI.
The chief minister had earlier claimed that although Sheikh works for a climate action group named Climate Development and Knowledge Network (CDKN), most of his works are related to Assam and India’s internal politics and less to climate.
Gogoi had earlier said that the allegations are like a C-grade Bollywood film with the release date set for September 10, and it is going to flop totally as the people of Assam understand everything. Gogoi had accused Sarma of indulging in politics by dragging his family, wife and children into the matter.
