Britain may send Vrindabani Vastra as loan to Assam in 2027

Guwahati: British Museum authorities have agreed to consider sending the Vrindabani Vastra - a large 16th century Assamese silk textile depicting the Dashavatara and scenes from the life of Lord Krishna - as loan to Assam in 2027, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said.

Created under the guidance of Srimanta Sankardeva, the Vrindabani Vastra will be on display at a new state-of-the-art museum for 18 months, Sarma said.

"While the state government has decided to grant one bigha land for setting up the museum near Khanapara, the JSW group, who has helped us establish contact with the British Museum on this, has agreed to build the proposed museum with their CSR funds," he said. This is because the existing museums in Assam do not have the facility for proper preservation of the Vrindabani Vastra. "We have been trying for this for a long time," Sarma said.
