Mercedes-Benz India has reached a major production milestone of rolling out 200,000 locally produced cars at its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. This historic feat was marked by the rollout of the EQS SUV , the company’s flagship electric model. The milestone vehicle was driven off the production line in the presence of Dr. Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management at Mercedes-Benz Group AG. He was joined by Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, and Vyankatesh Kulkarni, Executive Director & Head of Operations. This moment reflects nearly three decades of Mercedes-Benz’s operations in India, dating back to the commencement of local production in 1995. The company highlighted this achievement as a testament to its enduring commitment to the Indian automotive market.

Mercedes-Benz began its local manufacturing journey in India back in 1995, with the iconic W124 E-Class being the first model assembled on Indian soil. Over the years, the pace of production has significantly accelerated. While it took nearly 19 years to produce the first 50,000 units by 2014, the next 100,000 were completed within just nine years, and the most recent 50,000 cars were built in a remarkable span of only 2 years and 3 months, reaching the 2 lakh milestone in 2025. This historic achievement was marked by the rollout of the EQS SUV, the 200,000th vehicle manufactured at the company’s Chakan facility in Pune.

Back in 2015, the plant gained global attention when it became the first outside of Germany to build the prestigious Mercedes-Maybach S500 . Mercedes-Benz also took its first steps into electric vehicle production in India with the introduction of the EQS sedan in 2022, followed by the EQS 580 SUV in 2024. Currently, the brand offers the most extensive lineup of locally-assembled luxury vehicles in the country, with 11 different models produced within India.

With an investment exceeding ₹3,000 crore—making it the largest by any luxury car manufacturer in the country—and a recent addition of ₹200 crore in 2024, Mercedes-Benz continues to reaffirm its long-term commitment to the Indian market. The brand’s reach extends across the nation with more than 100 luxury experience touchpoints spread over 50+ cities. Adding to its significance, the Chakan facility had earlier earned global recognition by becoming the first plant outside Germany to produce the prestigious Mercedes-Maybach S500 in 2015. Since then, the site has steadily expanded its manufacturing capabilities, adding several high-end models to its local production portfolio.

Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said, "Mercedes-Benz production facility is the backbone of our Indian operations and has played a critical role in our market success, manufacturing world-class ICE and BEV products for the discerning Indian customers. Mercedes-Benz continues to set new standards in production quality, remaining invested in the market with highest investment by any luxury OEM in India. We will stay invested in our state-of-art manufacturing facility, catering to growing market demand for Mercedes-Benz products in the Indian market."
