Arsenal given transfer clarity with £55m rejected bid as Andrea Berta celebrates latest success

Send Push

Arsenal have broken their record for spending in a single transfer window with the signing of Eberechi Eze, which took the tally to more than £260million. They could yet add a further player to the seven they have already signed for football.london understanding of steps being taken to try and sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie.

However, the work that has already been done has Arsenal supporters certainly looking at sporting director Andrea Berta with plenty of adulation. The Italian has successfully upgraded Mikel Arteta’s squad quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively.

Wolves have now rejected bids of £50million and £55million from Newcastle United for Jorgen Strand Larsen. His 14 goals in his debut season followed his switch from Celta Vigo for a total fee of £25.5million just over a year ago.

Looking at the deal Berta secured for Europe's top goal scorer for the past two seasons, Viktor Gyokeres, and it is quite stunning to see the work achieved. Arsenal will pay Sporting CP around £64million, inclusive of add-ons, for the Swede, a figure just under £10million higher than the rejected bid from Newcastle for Stand Larsen.

This is far from the only example, either. Manchester City are looking to replace Ederson, should he leave, with Gianluigi Donnarumma a key target.

This will effectively make the £27million outlay on James Trafford the cost of their new second-choice keeper. Berta, meanwhile, paid the £5million release clause in Kepa Arrizabalaga's contract from Chelsea following a stellar season on loan at Bournemouth.

Noni Madueke will cost Arsenal an initial £48.5million with £3.5million in add-ons. The likes of Jamie Gittens (£52million), Mohammed Kudus (£55million), and Anthony Elanga (£55million) have cost as much or more.

Even Everton's signing of Tyler Dibling from Southampton for £42million highlights again a figure for Madueke that was scrutinised by supporters as being slightly better than perhaps the going rate for a winger in his profile, given his Premier League and European experience.

Christian Norgaard and Cristhian Mosquera were captured for a combined fee well below £30million. While Eze, considered to be one of the best players in the league for the past couple of seasons, even at £67.5million, feels like a great deal.

All these deals too occurred swiftly; Eze late on, but within 48 hours of the injury to Kai Havertz, the deal was done. After pivoting from Benjamin Sesko, the move for Gyokeres was sorted in less than a month so that he could join the pre-season tour of Asia.
