Meanwhile, in the Europa League, demonstrated why their home ground is known as the Theatre of Dreams on Thursday evening. The Red Devils staged a dramatic comeback against a 10-man Lyon side to clinch a 7-6 aggregate victory and secure their place in the Europa League semi-finals.

With a two-goal lead at half-time, it seemed like United fans were set for another successful European knockout tie. However, Paulo Fonseca's team had different ideas.

Quickfire goals from Corentin Tolisso, who was later sent off, and Nicolas Tagliafico squared things up and forced extra time. In a dramatic twist, Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette gave the 10 men a 4-2 lead, seemingly sealing United's European fate.

But a spirited fightback led by Casemiro drew a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes expertly put away. Two critical assists from the Brazilian star resulted in goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, which saw United snatch victory from the jaws of defeat at 5-4 - booking their spot in the semi-finals.

Having played for both Arsenal and United, Sanchez made no secret of his allegiance with a heartfelt Instagram post celebrating the Gunners' exceptional Champions League win.

Featuring an image of him in Arsenal colours, the club emblem, and a video from the Emirates Stadium, on Thursday Sanchez penned: "In Football, there are loves that you never forget. ARSENAL. La Forma de AlmaSoul."

Translating to 'The shape of soul', Sanchez intimates that Arsenal continues to hold a special place in his heart.

During his four-year tenure at Arsenal after his move from Barcelona, the 36-year-old striker left a significant mark, clocking up 166 appearances, scoring 80 goals, and contributing 44 assists. With two FA Cups and three Community Shields under his belt as a Gunner, it's evident that Sanchez harbours deep affection for his days in north London.

However, Sanchez's solitary season at United was a far cry from his impressive stint at the Emirates. In 45 appearances across all competitions, he managed a meagre five goals and nine assists.

Although his time under Jose Mourinho was marred by injuries, the striker revealed in 2020 that his tenure at Old Trafford left a sour taste.

Sanchez said: "Before, I had an agreement with Man City, but due to football issues, I accepted the opportunity to go to United. It felt tempting and it was something good for me.

"I liked this club a lot when I was a kid. Eventually, I signed but I didn't ask for information on what was happening inside the club. Sometimes there are things that you don't realise until you get there and I remember the first training session I had, I realised a lot of things."

He added: "After the session I got home and I told my family and my agent: 'Can you not rip up the contract to go back to Arsenal?' They laughed, I told them there's something that doesn't sit right, it doesn't seem good. But I already signed, I was already there. After the first few months I carried on having the same feeling, we weren't united as a team in that moment."

Sanchez's words offer a glimpse into his tumultuous time at United, a period that failed to live up to the lofty expectations surrounding his arrival. After a less-than-stellar stint with the once formidable United, Sanchez moved on to Inter Milan, where he found his winning form again.

The footballer clinched two Serie A titles with Inter, as well as a Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italia trophies.

Following this, he had spells with Marseille, returned to Inter for a second time, and is currently at Udinese, where he has been sidelined due to a calf injury after making just nine appearances this season.
